Welcome to the website of the Greek PDO cheese
Cheesenet is an interprofessional non-profit organisation that has undertaken the promotion of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) cheeses produced in Greece, supported by the Ministry for Rural Development and Food. The whole project also has the support of the Hellenic Milk Organisation, the Hellenic Foreign Trade Board (HEPO) and various cheese-making units.
The sector of livestock-farming that has prevailed in Greece is goat and sheep farming, because of the climatologic and geographic conditions that do not favour cow-farming. Seventy-five per cent of the country is occupied by mountainous and semi-mountainous regions, with natural flora whose development depends on sheep and goat grazing. Sheep and goat milk accounts for 60% of the total milk production; accordingly, at least 85% of cheese is produced from this milk.
